ELBOW “EMPIRES”
BWTV
Thank you for sharing this with us. To say we are excited about this track would be an understatement. It has inescapable gravity. A sobering reminder of the simple but easily ignored truth that what goes up must come down.
WHAT GOES UP MUST COME DOWN
We live in a strange time, and while it might be tempting to start drawing direct parallels with any number of recent geopolitical situations for us the track feels much broader than any literal interpretation. We want our video to have this same scale. We want to give the viewer enough space to unpack the track as they go through this viewing experience.
Our video will be composed as an emotive montage drawing together three main elements…
ELEMENT #1: THE UNCANNY VALLEY
Imagine a camera gently drifting through a seemingly endless metropolis. It is so detailed it looks like it should be real even though you know it is not. The buildings are all muted in colour. The city seems to occupy an infinite space.
Slowly, it begins to crumble, to fall in on itself. The rendering of the CG model begins to fall apart too. Archive footage of building textures and living cities from around the world flash and flicker on sections of the model buildings as the metropolis distorts and disintegrates. Like a living thing trying to remember itself in its final breaths. The simulation begins to fail, to fall apart completely until it no longer represents anything recognisable just an empty void of nothingness or perhaps a space for something new…
ELEMENT #2: WILD WORLD
We really want this to be tangible and humanistic - something of reminiscent of Koyaanisqatsi - so that viewers can connect to the emotion of the track. This will take the form of full screen archive footage that shows living cities buzzing with humanity from around the world and throughout time.
If our CG world is our abstract perspective on the theme, this material will represent a more emotional perspective on our history. The song definitely has a sense of mourning so we think it’s important to see real empires at their height and suggest important turning points in their decline. As mentioned in the brief - we want to avoid being heavy-handed so would steer clear of any obvious war imagery and steering towards more human moments that define this change. It’s hard to describe what we mean before we start researching because we want to pick memorable moments not generic ones. Here is an example of a short montage we did about ‘the world’ and all it’s crazy, beautiful, tragic glory.
ELEMENT #3: DESERT OF THE REAL
The third and final element in our cannon is modern HD drone footage from both “thriving cities” & fallen empires like the dusty metropolis’ of modern day Cairo or Demascus. This represents or present and the possibilities of our futures.
WE LOVE THIS VIDEO There’s a lot of high end drone material out there we can licence or another possibility is to commission some original material in a chosen location.
APPROACH
The edit will cut between these 3 worlds sowing them together through movement. We hope by combining these elements we will keep the human connection but make the video more dynamic, visible, contemporary & memorable!
We are well experienced in sourcing & licensing archive material so this part of process will be a straightforward case of doing some really excellent research. We’re know the right places to look and we can keep you as involved as you would need in order to hone our selection so it occupies the right tone.
As mentioned before the drone footage can be similarly sourced or commissioned if we want to really nail something or somewhere specific. All seems very doable within budget & timeframe!
As far as the CG world goes we’ve been working on some 3D renders for @kilokish and getting really into Cinema4D - the possibilities are limitless! Using the sterile infinity of these computer generated models as our canvass means we can easily offer a 360 version and with a little extra work a VR ready version of the video of the video. Below are some images & test movements MADE BY US!! For over the weekend because we’re just so excited about this!
ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO AN END
Maybe the deeper truth here is that empires aren’t the only things that crumble. For good or for bad, all things end. We’re all first witness to our own inescapable declines, time passes, things fade. Perhaps the only thing to do is to remain present and, where possible, try to capture and define a moment. We would be honoured to be able to share this moment with you and create something with real substance.
Thank you so much for getting back to us so soon if you have any addition thoughts or questions to give us a steer please let us know!!
Cheers,
BWTV
